Garden Training Workshop with La Huerta Roots and Rays

Workshop

Past

A stone path lined with lush green plants leads through an archway covered in vines toward a small wooden birdhouse and a community garden with raised beds and houses in the background on a sunny day.

Join the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum at La Huerta Roots & Rays Community Garden in Pilsen for a hands-on community gardening experience. Whether you are new to gardening or have  expertise you’d like to share, Hull-House invites you to join this outdoor summer workshop series. Feel free to drop in for a single workshop or attend all three. Each session will highlight different skills and periods of the growing season. All ages are welcome: Roots & Rays has toys and a play area for younger participants.

This collaborative workshop series is presented as part of Hull-House’s 2026 exhibition Perennial City: Experiments in Urban Gardening. The exhibition explores Chicago’s early experiments in urban gardening through histories of immigration and social reform—from immigrant gardeners cultivating leased industrial land to contemporary artists reimagining the city’s soil as a site of abundance and mutual care.

La Huerta Roots & Rays

Roots & Rays is a volunteer run urban garden designed to grow organic food for the people of Pilsen, grow knowledge through experience, and grow community by providing a safe shared green-space.
