About the painting
Women in long skirts and shawls pass between bright adobe buildings in this depiction of everyday life in Mexico. Thickly outlined buildings are arranged in an interlocking geometry of triangles, rectangles, and a distant church dome under a blue and white sky.
In 1925, Topchevsky accompanied Jane Addams and other settlement-house workers on an extended diplomatic trip to Mexico. They learned about the country’s revolutionary reforms, including programs aimed to support poor and Indigenous communities, which resonated with the aims of Hull-House. Topchevsky stayed for several years in Mexico, where he befriended the muralists Diego Rivera (1886–1957) and José Clemente Orozco (1883–1949), among others. Topchevsky brought his interest in Mexican modernism back to Hull-House, where he taught for many years.
