Hull-House Collection
Not on view
These samples from a much larger collection of doilies, blankets, mats, rugs, scarves, and table runners, which are unattributed and undated, were created by the communities surrounding Hull-House in the early twentieth century. Some of these textiles were crafted at the Hull-House Labor Museum, the settlement’s most successful early experiment in arts education. Through textile demonstrations, cooking lessons, manual training, lectures, and classes, the Labor Museum showcased the skills of neighborhood residents, especially the expertise of immigrant women. The word “museum” signified the value and dignity of craftwork.
